Developers offer distractions about new facades, their business goals, promised retail uses, and economic development. They hope their profit plan might take precedence over historic preservation law. Whether or not the project (including public funds as incentives) would actually create jobs or improve downtown Lawrence business is debatable. The entire debate is misdirection seeking to fool the public and the Commissioners.
The one and only issue with legal power is historic preservation. Saving our history is not negotiable. Many projects can use the land without destroying the relation to Landmark properties and the Historic District. Please get involved, and make enforcing historic preservation law your focus.
